Holy shit!
I am no expert in English, but I have some thoughts to share with all of you on some of the language loopholes.
I was brought up in a fully malay-speaking family, and to me English is not easy. But over time, I picked up the language here and there, and now just to be able to read and understand English is a blessing, not to mention to speak in English!
However, sometimes I picked up the wrong things..not so much wrong, just not too appropriate..For example, people use the word "shit" to describe "other things" and "hell" or "eff" to emphasise things, all the time. And I'd find myself trapped in situations where I can't use those words, not that I should be using those words, sometimes I just could not help it.
So for people like me, where English is not their first language..here are some substitutes you can use to replace the words shit, hell, eff etc.
"They were telling me how good they are; they're good at maths, computers, games, science...and all those shit" vs "They were telling me how good they are; apparently they're good at maths, computers, games, science..and all those nonsense (if you don't really care)/ cool skills that they have (if you think it's awesome) "
"What the hell is that????"/ "What the fuck is that??" vs. "What on earth is that??"
"Shit!" vs "shoot!"
"Don't be stupid!" vs "Don't be silly!"
Like I said earlier, I am no expert in English at. all. I just find it interesting how your selection of words can make a difference. I should improve my Malay too, enrich my Malay vocab. Who knows, one day, Malay could be the Lingua Franca again? Who knows.
