Ge-ren-ti, puas hati
Today I would like to touch on people's expectatations. Something that we face everyday. Sitting in GP clinics made me realize how high a patient's expectations can be towards their doctor. We had an interesting discussion about this and I thought I'd share.
First of all; why do people come to clinic? To see the doctor.
Next question; why do people want to see the doctor? To get better.
And how do doctors get people to feel better after seeing them?
a) Doctors prescribe medications
b) Doctors ask relevant questions and decide whether or not one needs a medicine.
c) Doctors don a dark robe, a long pointed hat and produce a magic wand in their hands and "Ting!" You're good to go.
I know a lot of you knows the right answer to this. But sadly, there are actually many people out there who think doctors are some kind of a wizard, who could cure a disease in a blink of an eye.
Fact number 1: Not all diseases need medications.
Do you know how perfectly built human is? Everything is in place in a very perfect manner. Most of the time, it is not medication that cure the disease, it is our body, our immune system. Our body has little soldiers that fight cancers, infections, and toxins.
So what's the point of taking medicine then, you might ask. Well, medicine is just a form of aid. And sometimes, we don't even need medicine to aid these soldiers. All they need is time. For example, in food poisoning. Our body just need to vomit it up and poo it out to get rid of the virus.
Fact number 2: You may have to come to the doctor twice or thrice for your disease
Like I said, doctors don't have a magic ball or a book of shadows to instantly point to you what's been going on with your body. They need blood tests, X-rays, some scans sometimes, to get a clue. And these tests take some time to come back with the results. And for this reason, you'll need to see the doctor again for follow-up(s). One visit is not all it takes to know whats happening, give them a chance.
Fact number 3: Tell YOUR story
A lot of times I heard people joke about how irony it is when someone sees the doctor and the doctor will be asking the patient "Sakit ape?". And you'll be like "Well you tell me". I admit, that question may have brought on a lot of pressure to the patient to give "clever" answers.Probably it is best replaced with "What brought you here today?". So in Malay..."Apa khabar pak cik, apa yang boleh saya bantu?" I guess. It kinda takes that pressure away.
As the patient, just tell your story! Don't be scared that it sounds weird or embarassing. The more you tell (relevant to your chief complain), the easier they can help you!
I'd probably get back to my study. The answer to my MCQ question (LOL) earlier is B. Marilah jumpa doctor, kami tak gigit! (we won't bite)
