Dr. Arizona

This is going to be a quick post. I have a gazillion of work to do, and I am obviously procastinating.
Today was one of the most hectic day at Waratah (Adult Mental Health Ward) cuz no registrars were covering the ward. So it was only me and the consultant. THE CONSULTANT. How could they expect consultants to do discharge summaries???? Haish. Anyways.

At the handover this morning, the consultant was like "Who have we got today, we've got Ernie!" with the most cheerful-est face I've ever seen a consultant can make. "And you're going to be my Junior Medical Registrar for today, are you up for it?" and I was like "I guess so.." with the tiniest little voice I have in my voice cord. "Excellent!"

Okay, I noticed that doctors often do this to medical students. But they do it for a wide variety of reasons.
1. They want you to do the shitty stuffs doctors have to do
2. They want patients to be more receptive of you
3. They want to motivate you

Reasons no. #2 and #3 aren't too bad..Reason no. #2 was done by that anaesthetist I like, cuz he was about to let an unexperienced medical student stick a needle into his patient's vein. He was introducing me to the patient as "Hi Mrs X, this is Ernie, our Senior Anaesthetist Doctor. Would you mind if she put a cannula in for the anaesthetics..?" So the patient will be like "Sure, go ahead". vs "Hi Mrs. X, this is Ernie, a 4th year medical student. Would you mind if she put a cannula in..?" And the patient will be like "Nah..Sorry darling, I am super anxious for the surgery, I don't want anymore pain." Fine.

I experienced reason no. #3 when I was doing cardiology. I was attached to the Red Team (yes, they colour code cardiology groups), with the nicest medical registrar, she's American, she looks like Arizona in Gray's Anatomy. Hahs. We were looking at the Power Chart, one patient had a deranged thyroid hormone level. So Dr. Arizona (let's call her Arizona here) was like, "Ernie would you like to do a consult, to inform the Endocrine team about the thyroid function test?" In my head I was like "A MEDICAL STUDENT, DOING A CONSULT??WHO WOULD LISTEN TO US??" and as if she could hear what I was saying inside my head, she was like "don't worry, I'll be here to assist you" . So with trembling hands I paged the Endocrine Consultant. When he answered the page, I introduced myself, and state the reason why I paged. and he too "Can a medical student do a consult??" Anyways, when the patient was reviewed, and a diagnosis was made, Dr. Arizona, with her sparkly blue eyes and cute American accent was like "Look at that, Ernie. You saved that old man's life! You made the consult, you made the diagnosis!" and I was on cloud 9. haha

Anyways, my point here, today, the consultant did that for reason no. #1, but I can tell he really appreciates my help. I learnt a lot too. I am glad I could help, it was the best feeling ever. So thank You. Oh my, I have to get back to work. Bye!
